Reflection Post

Updated: Apr 27, 2019

In my time as a student of COMM 351 I have maneuvered through the semester long ePortfolio project facing a combination of challenging and learning experiences that boosted my professional presence. As the semester comes to a close, I come away feeling grateful for the ePortfolio project, as my initiative and drive for organization and content concerning my endeavors as a pre professional has been greatly impacted for the better. The ability that I now have in going to a central source for my works and listed experiences is very useful and will be a key resource for my future efforts in the professional world. Placing and moving around pieces of my own created work through the ePortfolio put professional exercises into play and served as great experience for the tasks I will accomplish when I eventually enter into a new realm of professionalism after college.

The aspect I enjoy the most about my created ePortfolio is the accessible and easy nature of it as a whole. Although I was explicitly assigned to make an ePortfolio for the duration of this course, I found enjoyment and significance in the design and makeup of my created page, and was always pleased in making additions to it as the time passed. Going forward, I expect to find more points of liking to my ePortfolio page, but as of now I find the accessibility and easy makeup of it as my favorite portion of it due to its relevance as my current job and professional efforts expand as time goes by. My favorite sample course project that I created and posted to my ePortfolio was the public presentation PowerPoint I completed. I analyzed and made note of the use or misuse of difference as a concept and profound mission statements among nonprofit organization managerial job listing. I favored this course project over the rest composed and found in my ePortfolio page due to the effective practice of oral communication through analyzation processes.

Editing and maintaining an organized body of my professionally touched works was the most challenging aspect of my time contributing to the ePortfolio project. Although I did find enjoyment in having a collected portfolio of my works all in one place online, I did find the consistent editing to be difficult and time-consuming at times. It was essential to edit and organize in an effective and thorough way, but it did require my effort to be at one hundred percent, with little room for botched execution. If I were to give advice to a future student concerning this challenging aspect of the ePortfolio project, it would be to remain motivated and reminded of the purpose of the project in the first place. Though the process of editing and organizing my page required a sizable amount of time and effort, I kept myself motivated to continue placing solid effort to such a useful resource for my life as a pre professional. Individuals who may find themselves in a similar position and feeling in a future class should remain calm and driven for the greater good of their collected works on their own ePortfolio page.

If I were to describe the intersectional relation of interpersonal and organizational communication to a potential employer, emphasis would be placed on the important functions both areas play in a work setting. Interpersonal communication is the actual exchange of information and messages through a given relationship or occurrence between two or more people, whereas organizational communication is the processed embodiment of these interpersonal exchanges in a greater work space of the given organization at hand. These two areas of communication intersect and create a larger picture for a common workplace’s functionality and order with a mutual dependence of success on both parts. In addition to this important take away is being knowledgeable of ethical communication processes. An effective use of such prioritization in ethics for an organization can build a foundation of inclusion for every worker involved, from top to bottom. It is essential to approach a work environment with an open mind with a mission to welcome and respect all, while keeping in mind the ethical ways you do so while designing such a work place. Noting and practicing ethics in an office space is crucial for the inclusion to come after your efforts.

My view of communication is much more enhanced from where it was when I first entered this course. I now understand the wider scope communication casts within organizations and interpersonal exchanges and where my focus should be when I enter in the professional work force. Working through projects enhanced my learning process and will lead me to a better place for many years to come, with the ePortfolio project as a main contributor to my improvement in comprehension of communication as a whole.
